A judge has granted T’Kia Bevily a second trial in the murder case of her stepdaughter. She was originally convicted of the crime in January 2021, but a new court ruling has cleared the way for a new trial. Earlier this year, T’Kia was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her daughter, Jurayah Smith. In October of 2017, T’Kia was taking care of her baby while her husband, Morris Bevily IV, was out at work. Unfortunately for T’Kia, Jurayah died after several blunt force traumas to her head. However, her lawyer claims she did not cause her injuries. The jury did not believe her version of events, but that doesn’t mean she’s innocent.

The jury’s verdict, which was a dead ringer to the verdict that was given to T’Kia, was not the best of the best. Her defense team learned during the course of the trial that one juror was related to the victim’s mother. This is the first time a jury has been shown to be linked to a victim in a court of law, and the claim was a major surprise to the defendants. As such, the court ordered a new jury to hear the case. Interestingly, the new trial is 225 miles away from the original site of the trial. If the case goes to court again, prosecutors may decide to revisit the case in the future.

One of the most interesting parts of the T’Kia case is the fact that the court ordered the trial to be a two-day event. This means that the defense has a chance to prove that its theory that her daughter was the culprit behind Jurayah’s death is valid. At the same time, the prosecution has the opportunity to re-file charges against Bevily in the future. There are no specifics about the injury that led to the child’s death, but it is known that her family moved to the New Orleans area.

T’Kia’s new trial, which will take place in May of 2022, is the best example of the court allowing a defendant to be re-tried for a capital crime without compromising her right to a fair trial. Despite this, the 22nd Circuit District Attorney’s office remains tight-lipped about the details of the case.
