Helena Bonham Carter was born and trained at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before making her stage debut with Trelawney of the Wells production in 1983. Preceded by stage and television appearances, she made her film debut in Michael Mann’s 1984 remake of Miami Vice as Don Johnson’s junkie fiancee; later starring alongside Ray Winstone in two-parter biopic of Anne Boleyn. She has appeared in multiple Merchant Ivory productions, such as A Room With a View (1985), Where Angels Fear to Tread (1987) and Lady Jane (1986). Carter is best-known for her portrayal of children’s author Enid Blyton in the BBC Four film Enid (2009) and mother to the chimpanzees in Planet of the Apes 2007. Other films she has appeared in include Hamlet (1990), Fight Club (1999), Mighty Aphrodite (1995), Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005), Great Expectations (2012) with Miss Havisham as Miss Havisham and Alice in Wonderland (2010) as Red Queen. Most recently she has appeared as Princess Margaret in seasons three and four of Netflix’s The Crown series.
