90’s Gucci By Tom Ford Dress

Bella Hadid Rocks a Rare 90’s Gucci By Tom Ford Dress

Vintage Gucci pieces can be hard to come by, which was evident when Bella Hadid appeared at Cannes last Thursday wearing an exquisite curve-hugging white dress from Tom Ford’s Fall 1996 collection – first worn by Carolyn Murphy during its initial debut – featuring an eye-catching cutout at the hip that revealed a gold metal monogrammed buckle from Tom Ford. We were so delighted to see Bella wear such an important and rare piece – it truly shows just how influential Tom Ford was during his 10-year reign at Gucci!

Ford was widely recognized for not only saving the brand from bankruptcy in the ’90s but also reinvigorating it as a tour de force within luxury industry. From his sleek vision of sensuality to provocative ads campaigns – his changes truly revolutionized fashion during this period.

Ford, born in Texas and educated at Parsons School of Design in New York City, began his career as an in-house designer for Perry Ellis before being recruited as chief women’s ready to wear designer by Gucci in the early 1990s. While initially overshadowed by Dawn Mello (Gucci’s public face), he soon emerged as its creative director.

Ford revitalized the house by introducing his signature feminine silhouettes – including skinny satin shirts and velvet flares – as well as eye-catching shapes and materials. Notable among his runway collections were sexy ads shot by photographers Mario Testino and Steven Meisel that exuded glamour, controversy and sexuality; attributes which would define his legacy at the house.

After 14 years as creative director at Gucci, Ford left to form his own label in 2004. Although Ford played an instrumental role in helping Gucci return to success under Kering ownership, his future with Gucci remains uncertain.

Hadid looked stunning on the red carpet, but we are more eager to see what she wears when Gucci shows start up again in June. Their newly launched fashion house promises more youthful collections while maintaining classic items such as its logo belt and horsebit heels.

Looking forward to the latest ad campaigns featuring celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Carine Roitfeld and Emma Stone is also exciting – we can’t wait to see which iconic styles will make an appearance!
