A Little-Known Lady With a Heart of Gold

Today’s news is not all about the Kardashians. In fact, you may be interested in an obscure little known story about a lady with a heart of gold who is known as Jo Ann Shannon. She passed away on August 27, 2022, at the age of 84. Not only was she a loving grandmother, but she was also a loyal friend. A well-liked member of the Houghton community, she was a volunteer at Fort Madison Community Hospital’s Gift Shop.

As a child, Jo was fascinated by the science and technology behind the television. She strove to be a scientist and later went on to study child development at Iowa State University. She is known for her enthusiasm for all things health related. For example, she crocheted hundreds of baby hats at the local hospital’s NICU.

Jo and her husband Don ran a small veterinary practice and the couple also raised four children. They also managed to raise a foreign exchange daughter. One of their proudest achievements was the creation of the Houghton Bloodmobile, which has been around for over 40 years.

Despite their busy schedules, Jo and Don found time to play the harp and enjoy a good book. They were married in 1958. Their children were raised in Houghton, where they enjoyed a healthy dose of old-fashioned fun. Some of their happiest memories were spent at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, Colorado.

Despite her storied career, Jo found time to be a mom, a wife, a sister, a philanthropist, a philic, and a proud citizen of the state. Even in her declining years, she maintained a positive outlook and was an avid walker. At her ripe old age, she was still involved in the Houghton community. From organizing the Houghton Bloodmobile to volunteering at Fort Madison Community Hospital’s Gift Shop, the Jo and her husband are proud citizens of the community.

In addition to being a good mother, spouse, and philanthropist, Jo was also an accomplished photographer and inventor. Her aptly titled collection of evocative and eye catching photographs of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren is a testament to her love for family and the arts.
