What is a Role Model in Spanish?

Role models in Spanish refer to individuals that can serve as inspiration to others, particularly young people. This concept was first proposed by Robert K. Merton’s sociological work back in 1949 and rests upon the assumption that their behavior and abilities can be traced to specific families and cultures.

Adults usually refer to someone as their role model when speaking about themselves and want to emulate. A popular example of this would be Dora the Explorer, who many young girls view as a way of exploring and discovering more of what’s around them. Other examples would be cheerleaders admired for both their appearance and mannerism on and off the field or successful businesspeople who uphold high standards for themselves while treating employees fairly and striving towards success.

Roles models can also be national in scope; for instance, Chilean politicians and intellectuals looked towards France for guidance during much of the 19th century.

New parents need someone they can turn to after giving birth – often no immediate family can provide them with support or act as role models – in this instance a sports star with strong appeal may become the person that new parents look up to as an exemplar.

Musicians and entertainers can serve as role models as well. The music industry is full of inspiring figures whom their fans look up to and admire, such as Scott Borchetta of Big Machine Records. He serves as an excellent role model due to his career success and magnetic personality; fans aspire to follow in his footsteps; also because he strives to make positive contributions in his community with strong willpower that others can follow; helping those in need is another important characteristic that draws teens toward him as their role model.
