Molly Shannon has become the longest-serving female cast member on Saturday Night Live (SNL), creating numerous memorable characters over time, most notably Mary Katherine Gallagher from Catholic school who dreams of becoming an musical superstar.

She created many popular SNL characters including Sally O’Malley (an oddly proud 50-year-old dancer with an extravagant hairdo), Helen Madden: Licensed Joyologist, Veronica Kilvere – an airhead fashion model who hosts “Veronica & Co.” talk show; Terry Rialto (National Public Radio host of “Delicious Dish”) (with Ana Gasteyer).

In 1997, she guest-starred on Seinfeld as Sam, Elaine’s co-worker who drives her bonkers due to not swinging her arms when walking. In 1999’s Superstar she made her feature film debut playing an awkward Catholic school girl who dreams of becoming a music superstar.

Other notable film roles of hers include 1999 movie Never Been Kissed with Meg Ryan and Osmosis Jones; 2001 comedy Serendipity-based Serendipity opposite Kate Beckinsale; TV remake of The Music Man; guest star roles in More of Me (2007) and Twelve Days of Christmas Eve (2004) as well.

Her roles on NBC’s Kath & Kim from 2008-2009 and TBS’s Neighbors from Hell (2010) cemented her status as one of America’s favorite comic actresses, while other TV appearances include Cracking Up (2004), Glee (2009) and Will & Grace (1998).

Shannon has earned numerous recognitions for her work on television, including a Golden Globe nomination as Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Enlightened (2013) and receiving the Independent Spirit Award for Other People (2013), before continuing this performance in The Other Two (2015).

She has appeared as a guest on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and is an outspoken advocate in the LGBTQ community; her advocacy efforts have been covered by media such as New York Times, Time, and Entertainment Weekly.

Molly Shannon was devastated at a young age after witnessing the deaths of her mother, baby sister and cousin in a car accident with her father at the wheel. Yet their close bond gave her courage to pursue an artistic career path.

Since leaving SNL, she has appeared in various films and television shows, including her star turn as Joanne in Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning Other People. For this role she won an Independent Spirit Award as Best Supporting Actress; Other People follows a woman diagnosed with terminal cancer who decides to move back home with her son.
