Nathan Chen – The First Asian-American Male Figure Skater

A lifelong figure skater, Nathan Chen has spent most of his life on the ice. He started skating at age three and went on to win several national and world titles.

After a couple of years on the circuit, he took to the international scene. At the age of fifteen, he won a silver medal at the Junior Nationals and then qualified for the World Junior Championships. His success was highlighted by his performances in the short and free skates.

By the time he competed in the World Junior Championships in 2014, he was a three-time World champion. He was also the youngest male skater in the United States to compete at the Olympics since 2001. During the competition, he defeated reigning World champion Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan. The victory earned him three entries into the United States team for the 2015 World Junior Championships.

Nathan Chen’s performance at the Winter Games in Salt Lake City was not the easiest of competitions. Though he was well-prepared, he suffered a growth-related heel injury just weeks before the championships. But he came out with a bang, topping a record-breaking short program with a soaring free skate.

Nathan Chen’s career has been defined by his jumps and musicality. As the first Asian-American man to win U.S., World and Olympic titles, he is the ultimate example of how a skater can change the landscape of men’s figure skating.

In addition to his successes on the ice, Nathan Chen is a data scientist at Yale University. As a student, he studied statistics and data science. He says the most challenging part of the competition was the short skate.

While Chen may not be the most athletically gifted of athletes, his talents were undeniable. This was evidenced by his double toe loop in the free skate. It is hard to imagine anyone else landing a quad jump like this.

Despite his early struggles in the short and free skate, Nathan Chen was able to overcome his shortcomings and become a rising star. With a total score of 22 points, Chen was the most dominant player in the field.

Nathan Chen has six national titles and is considered one of the best male skaters in the world. Among his notable achievements, he is the only male figure skater to land five quadruple jumps in a single program. And he is also the only skater to land all four of the Olympic-standard quad jumps: a triple axel, a quad toe loop, a quad toe loop, and a quad salchow.

For his efforts in the free skate, he earned a spot on the Team North America bronze medallists. Several skaters, including teammate Adam Rippon, have won the Four Continents.

Whether he wins the Olympic gold in 2022 or not, there is no denying that Nathan Chen has left his mark on the sport. Despite his impressive athletic accomplishments, the Olympic champion admits that the challenge of competing at the Winter Games was the most difficult of his life.
