Birmingham’s Hippodrome Presents Kinky Boots

For a glamorous and educational night out, head to Birmingham’s Hippodrome for Kinky Boots. Based on the 2005 British movie with music written by pop icon Cyndi Lauper, this gender-bending musical challenges gender stereotypes with its infectious score and powerful message of acceptance.

The Story

In this heartwarming and humorous new musical, the heir to an ailing shoe factory is faced with saving their business by designing extravagant footwear for drag queens. They meet Lola, a fabulous performer who has been pining for some sturdy stilettos, and they form an unlikely alliance that helps both of them regain their place within the company.

The Creative Team

A talented group of directors and choreographers created this production, including Broadway legend Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles) and director/choreographer Jerry Mitchell whose Hairspray won six Tony Awards. Cyndi Lauper composed the score for this show which has been described as infectious, multi-colored and surprising.

The Cast

Onstage, there are plenty of talented actors including Paula Lane (Corrie’s Kylie Platt) and Demitri Lampra as Lauren and Don. But Cecil Washington Jr. shines brightest as Lola, played by him with his powerful voice that cuts through the crowd like a torch through air. This actor truly commands attention onstage.

Kinky Boots features an ensemble cast with captivating characters who all embark on unique journeys throughout the show. This thrilling combination of dance and singing offers audiences a rare chance to witness an exceptional cast and some stunning costumes on Birmingham’s stage.

Costume Designer Sharon Morgan is a University of Alabama at Birmingham alumna and her work on the show will be appreciated by many students. Other UAB grads on staff at Red Mountain Theatre include costume assistant Olivia Bowles, props supervisor Jessica Mathews and lead electrician Lew Williams.
