Alex Jones, the InfoWars Host Who Claimed That the Sandy Hook Elementary School Massacre Was Fake, Was Sanctioned For Breaking Court Orders
Alex Jones, the InfoWars host who claimed that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was fake, was sanctioned for breaking court orders during his trial in Connecticut. He was admonished for violating numerous orders to hand over documents. During the 10-day trial, the InfoWars host elicited grief and anger from the judges and lawyers.
Lawyers representing a group of grieving parents testified that their clients have been subjected to death threats after Jones spread lies about the massacre. The attorneys told them that their first amendment right to free speech does not prevent them from being threatened. However, they also criticized Jones for using “first-class attorneys” and refusing to turn over critical documents.
As part of the trial, Alex Jones and his attorneys were given a chance to present their arguments. They also had the opportunity to tell the jury how they viewed the case. It was not clear how the jury would decide the amount of damages. But Jones’ attorney argued that Texas law limits the amount of punitive damages. In addition, the judge barred Jones from filing a motion to dismiss the case.
Jones has been accused of spreading conspiracy theories for 20 years. His online platform reached millions. Several families of victims of the Sandy Hook massacre have filed lawsuits against him. These families claim that he defamed them and abused them.
After a judge found Jones liable, he was ordered to pay nearly $50 million in damages. He was subsequently admonished by the same judge for not turning over the documents that were requested by the families. While the jury did not determine whether he was guilty, they did hear a death threat against another family from a family of Sandy Hook victims.
Alex Jones is also facing a defamation lawsuit. He was ordered to pay nearly $3 million in damages to another family. The parents of Jesse Lewis, a 6-year-old child who was killed in the Sandy Hook shooting, were one of the plaintiffs.
The attorney for the parents of Jesse Lewis sat in the witness box while Alex Jones stood at the front of the room. Jones, who has four bodyguards with him during testimony, elicited anger and fear from the jury. When Scarlett Lewis addressed Jones, Jones visibly shook his head. During the trial, Jones argued with the parents’ attorney. A member of the jury watched a 2017 InfoWars clip.
Jones was able to take a plea deal in October. He was ordered to pay a $150,000 fine. His lawyer requested a stay on his fines.
The trial in Connecticut began on Tuesday. Jones’ lawyers are expected to continue their argument in December. This trial is the second in the battle between Jones and Sandy Hook families. Another trial is set to take place next week. Bailen is a partner at the Washington-based law firm BakerHostetler. Although Bailen has tried to engage Times Legal, he has been unsuccessful.
Jones is currently fighting half a dozen defamation lawsuits. He is also being subpoenaed by a House committee investigating the January 6 riot.
