Minecraft YouTuber Technoblade has passed away at 23 years old after a year-long battle with cancer. The sandbox gamer had been diagnosed with sarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer that affects connective tissues within the body.
After his passing was announced, prominent influencers and gamers paid tribute to the videogame star on social media platforms. The popular Minecraft streamer, who boasted 11 million subscribers, revealed his cancer diagnosis in a video posted last August.
His 22-year-old status as a “legend” among gamers was confirmed by those who shared his videos on Twitter. Additionally, the 22-year-old helped raise over $323,000 for cancer research through a livestream, Dot Esports reported on Friday.
In an emotional video, Technoblade’s father read a letter that he claimed Technoblade wrote to his followers hours before his passing. The statement noted that Technoblade was an upstanding kid who always tried to delight and reward his audience with online prizes, encouraging good sportsmanship and sharing Minecraft adventures for laughs.
His YouTube channel had amassed more than 11 million subscribers by the time of his passing, according to his family. Additionally, he had an affinity for Hypixel minigames, a multiplayer server where players can create virtual worlds and compete against one another.
The gaming YouTuber’s sudden passing shocked his devoted followers. Since 2013, he had built up an engaged YouTube community through humorous Minecraft videos.
His identity remained secret for much of his life, but in a video his father revealed that his real name was Alex. He explained how his followers had mistakenly believed he was named Dave.
This came as a shock, since the young man in his 20s had always kept his identity private.
In the video, he also revealed that he had battled cancer for one and a half years and received treatment at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. His family has since stated they wish to keep his privacy intact.
