Is Gavin Newsom Still Governor of California?
If you’re a California voter, you’ve probably been wondering if you should re-elect Governor Gavin Newsom. Newsom’s first term in office was defined by a series of emergencies. After the COVID-19 pandemic, California was in the bottom five states in vaccination rates, and Newsom was accused of mishandling the response. The state also faced a soaring inflation rate, which contributed to a decline in population.
However, despite this, Newsom won a second term as governor, with a strong majority vote in the election. Although this isn’t necessarily a resounding victory, it is an impressive accomplishment for a candidate who barely campaigned in his home state. In fact, it’s a testament to the enduring popularity of the Democratic Party in the Golden State.
Newsom was elected as the Governor of California in 2018, winning 62% of the vote. He defeated his opponent Michael Shellenberger in the primary election that year. At the time, it was thought that Shellenberger would have a shot at unseating Newsom in the general election.
During the recall, which was an attempt to unseat Newsom, he had an unprecedented victory. But that didn’t last long, with a new wave of recalls threatening his reelection. This time around, he was challenged by State Senator Brian Dahle.
In a debate, Dahle emphasized his focus on the economy and unemployment while claiming that the “biggest California problems” are those that Newsom has been able to address. Though Newsom did not mention any specifics, he did make the case for an statewide abortion measure.
Newsom has spent the past year signing liberal legislation, including the nation’s first statewide stay-at-home order, and has also aggressively invested in renewable energy, such as the state’s solar and wind projects. His most recent budget includes more money for health care for the poor, as well as free kindergarten for all 4-year-olds in California.
In the midst of his reelection campaign, Newsom has spent some of his own money on advertisements, both in California and other states. He’s also used his political clout to attack Republicans in Florida and Texas, and he was even seen driving a semi-truck around the state in a campaign banner.
Newsom’s reelection campaign hasn’t been without its share of controversy. Some voters have questioned his stewardship of the pandemic, and he was criticized for not being strict enough with the shutdown measures. Other critics have argued that he was too slow to reopen industries and bring back manufacturing. While he did win reelection in the end, many believe that his time in office was a disaster.
One of the biggest challenges to Newsom’s reelection is convincing low-propensity voters to cast their ballots in absentee. And in a recall, voters may well be averse to wasting their hard-earned money on an incumbent. Despite this, a solid reelection campaign should be easy to execute.
Newsom has also been accused of trying to run a covert presidential primary campaign. That’s an apt claim, as California is considered to be the most deep-blue state in the country.
