Huntington Beach – Things to See and Do
There are some things that you need to know before you hit Huntington Beach. One is that it’s not a place for novices. That’s because the beach is a rip-rap and waves can get very curvy. So, the best thing to do is to keep your distance from the water and stay in front of the lifeguard tower. You also don’t want to venture too far out of the designated areas because you’re likely to drown.
Another thing you should know is that there are some real cool things to see at Huntington Beach. This includes the Snowy Plover. The endangered species is located at the southern end of the beach and skims along the shoreline.
For the most part, the best time to view the Snowy Plover is during the spring or summer. However, it’s still possible to watch the birds as early as January. Some of the best places to catch a glimpse of these birds are at the Talbert Channel and the Santa Ana River. If you don’t have your heart set on visiting this particular spot, check out the adjacent beach, the Bolsa Chica State Beach.
Another place to check out is the dog beach. These are a fun place to visit if you’re in the mood for a day out with the family. In fact, these beaches are among the most popular in the city. During the summer, they draw crowds for the bare-handed fishing. While dogs are allowed on the beach, they’re not allowed in the reserve.
You may also be interested in the Grunion Run, an annual event which allows for a little surf fishing when there aren’t any other swimmers around. To participate, you’ll need a CA Fishing license. But, if you want to go bare-handed, make sure you have a buddy with you.
As you might imagine, Huntington Beach has its share of lost and found items. From a baby parrot to a gray and white desert lynx cat, there’s a chance that you’ll find what you’re looking for. Just be careful, because it’s a big, wide world out there. Don’t forget to check out the Visitor Information Kiosk. They have a good selection of beach bonfires, as well. It’s a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon with the family.
