Fred Armisen Performs at the 40 Watt Club

During his tenure on Saturday Night Live, Fred Armisen has racked up a long list of awards and accolades. He has also landed memorable roles in comedy films such as the Grand Theft Auto series and Parks and Recreation. His other accomplishments include writing and starring in the mockumentary Documentary Now! and pranking musicians as part of his “Fred Armisen’s Guide to Music” documentary. In the past, Armisen has played the drummer in the Blue Man Group’s “How to be a Megastar Live!” and is also an avid fan of punk rock music. Earlier this year, he took to the stage at the 40 Watt Club in his hometown of Athens, Georgia.

Fred Armisen’s contributions to Saturday Night Live include his portrayal of Michael Bloomberg. The actor was promoted to repertory cast member status in 2004. One of his more notable minor roles came in the form of Speedy Gonzales on the show’s predecessor, The Looney Tunes Show. Also, he is a recurring character on Parks and Recreation. Besides his television work, he has also worked on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Crank Yankers, and Adult Swim.

He is also the star of several documentary shorts. A few notable ones include the “Salad Days” and the “Fred Armisen’s Guide To Music”. It was filmed in the deserts of Texas by Armisen’s girlfriend Sally Timms. This surprisingly prankish effort was a big hit, and led to a brief stint on Comedy Central’s Crank Yankers. Another noteworthy endeavor was a short film entitled the “Comment Me” that showcased his talent for a good time.

Armisen is also a musician, and has branched out into the world of comedy spoofs. As part of the comedy duo ThunderAnt with Sleater-Kinney guitarist Carrie Brownstein, he has starred in a number of skits, focusing on the various ways to have a successful independent life. They even have a show called the “Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee”. Besides that, he’s also an avid fan of music, and has played drums in the “How to be a Megastar Live!” documentary and the blues-rock band Hootie and the Blowfish.

One of the most notable events to take place at the 40 Watt Club was the 40th anniversary of R.E.M.’s debut EP. The event, which was produced by the Pylon Reenactment Society, included a variety of tribute performances. For instance, the aptly titled “Carnival of Sorts (Boxcar)” saw several musical acts in attendance, including Lenny Kaye, the Indigo Girls, and the Pylon Reenactment Society. Other notable performers at the event included Barrett Martin, Def Rain, and David Ryan Harris.

On December 14, the Chronic Town album will be celebrated with a concert at the Coca-Cola Roxy in Atlanta. Along with a host of other notable musicians, the show will include a performance by John Driskell Hopkins of Zac Brown Band. Among other things, the show will feature an entire oeuvre of the EP, complete with an acoustic version of “Gardening at Night”.
