Olivia Jade Giannulli is a fashion and beauty influencer renowned for her glamorous Instagram photos. Additionally, she’s been part of Dancing With the Stars since its 30th season, and recently announced she’ll be hosting an iHeartRadio podcast this fall called Conversations with Olivia Jade.
She’s an actress and writer, but her main platform of influence lies on social media as a beauty influencer. Her videos have amassed over 1 million subscribers on YouTube and she boasts an Instagram following of 1.3 million, according to Business Insider.
After her parents, Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli, were indicted in March 2019 in connection with Operation Varsity Blues, she took a month-long hiatus from social media. But then in the weeks that followed she shared several cryptic videos and vlogs on Instagram–including one in which she gave two middle fingers to the press–with increasing frequency.
Although the footage has since been deleted, it was posted to her Instagram story and included a message for her friends. Though it’s unclear what she was trying to convey with this gesture, it suggests she felt pressured into returning to college after her parents’ arrests.
Olivia, a sophomore at USC, hasn’t taken classes or requested transcripts since the scandal broke. Instead, she’s been focused on her career with collaborations on makeup tutorials and giving dorm tours for Amazon and Sephora as well as signing an endorsement deal with Marc Jacobs Beauty.
Recently on her podcast, she acknowledged taking her fame for granted due to her parents’ wealth. However, she added, “I think it’s essential to talk about what it’s like living in that privilege because there are so many people who don’t have the same opportunities as me and my family do.”
On her podcast, she addressed the misconception that she got into such a good school because of her parents. Despite their arrests, she continued to work hard and pursue what she loved despite their absences.
It appears she may be seeking to re-engage her followers. According to a global branding and public-relations expert, if she can reconnect with her fans, it could even turn her reputation for scandal into an asset in today’s digital age.
Her college admissions scandal made her famous and led to an unfair backlash, yet she remains a likeable person with a great sense of humor. Furthermore, it appears that she truly cares about the world around her as evidenced by her comments on Instagram Stories.
Her conversations with fans and followers on Instagram and Twitter have provided insight into what life as a celebrity is like. Though she’s been criticised for her narcissism, she has also demonstrated that being in the spotlight doesn’t have to mean being immune from criticism. Instead, she has demonstrated vulnerability while engaging with her audience.
