There’s an incongruity here: a glam pop star who claims to be sober is promoting her latest album while admitting to smoking marijuana and drinking in moderation. It’s an uneasy balance, but one Aguilera has successfully navigated throughout her career.
Christina Aguilera has been renowned for her distinctive voice since childhood. She can hit notes at four octaves and features an incredible whistle register, both of which she uses to great effect on her albums.
Her vocals are so impressive that it’s difficult to believe she could sing anything else, despite not having classical training. But that’s not all that sets her apart – she also has an eye for beauty and an unmistakably unique look.
Her unique sense of style earned her a spot on Disney Channel’s variety show The New Mickey Mouse Club, where she sang alongside co-stars Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Rhona Bennett and JC Chasez. In a documentary about the show entitled Driven, she even claims that other cast members called her “the Diva”.
While on the show, Aguilera developed an interest in performing for live audiences. She started singing at local clubs and by 13 had signed to a record label.
At fourteen, she released her first single, entitled “A Sunday Kind of Love.” Produced by a major label, it went on to reach the top ten of Argentina’s charts and earned her a Grammy Award nomination.
At eighteen, she had already released her debut studio album and won major awards. Additionally, she embarked on her first tour and released several more successful albums such as Stripped (2002), Back To Basics (2006) and Bionic (2010).
Her next studio album, Liberation, was released in 2018. It earned her both a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and American Music Award for Favorite Female Rock Artist. Additionally, she contributed two songs to the soundtracks of Addams Family (2019) and Mulan (2020).
At the start of her career, Aguilera was seen as an edgy pop artist. She explored genres like disco and rock, while coining herself “Baby Jane.” To match, she donned a more mature image with blonde hairstyles.
This drastic shift in her musical style was met with some controversy. Fans didn’t appreciate the more sophisticated sound and she cancelled her 20-city summer tour after receiving negative feedback. Subsequently, Warlock Records – who had distributed the demos she recorded when fifteen – was sued for breach of contract and unfair competition.
Her music has gained mainstream success with the releases of “Hit the Lights” in 2002 and “Piece of My Heart” in 2003, yet her voice remains distinctive. She is renowned for her social activism; donating proceeds from tours to charity. Additionally, she has appeared on billboards encouraging people to vote. Additionally, she stars every year at Fashion Rocks concert for Elton John’s AIDS foundation that is televised annually.
