The diff is what keeps your car wheels from spinning at all times. This animated gif shows how torque is distributed across the diff. Diffs are common on new cars. These cars have moved from traditional automatic transmissions to more modern continuously adjustable transmissions (CVTs). These CVTs use cones and bands to act like an infinite number of gears. A car equipped with a DAF (or differential) can go twice as fast forwards than backwards.
